Submissions

It Takes All Kinds is published three times per year, during the months of February, June, and October (beginning in 2023).

The following guidelines are current as of 12 October 2023.

There is no theme, as the general theme of the publication is to share the voices of many.

Submissions are open and ongoing. To get a feel of how an issue looks/reads, check out any of the previously published issues available at archive.org.

There is no particular deadline for an issue unless noted on social media.

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES MUST BE MET, WHERE APPLICABLE.

To submit:

1. Up to three poems, one short story (under 1000 words), or two pieces of flash fiction (under 500 words each). Also open to opinion pieces, slice-of-life stories, book and music reviews, and humor, as long as it is under 1000 words. All writing MUST have a title.

2. Art, comics, and photography are also accepted. The zine is half-size, so images must fit that or be scalable. Images for the front and back covers MUST be sized to fit the page (8.5" by 5.5"). If you’re submitting an image for the front or back cover, please note that in your email. Images may include writing, however, do not include the name of the publication on the image you submit to the zine.

3. All poetry and story submissions MUST be in 12-point Times New Roman and in a .doc or .docx file OR in the body of the email.

4. If your work has non-standard formatting, please send it as an image, or in a .pdf file. This is the ONLY time a .pdf is acceptable.

5. Your name MUST be in the file name.

6. Include a short third-person bio, even if you've submitted writing in the past. If you don’t, and your work is accepted, your bio will simply be [no bio submitted]. You are welcome to include a URL or form of contact. Keep your bio under 50-65 words, not including a social media handle or URL. Bios that don't fit this guideline may be subject to editing.

7. You will receive a copy of the .pdf for the issue in which your work appears.

8. No simultaneous submissions. If your submission is accepted, it will be published. If you choose to withdraw your accepted submission for any reason, any other work that's been accepted (but not yet published) may be subject to rejection, and you will not be permitted to submit work again for one year.

9. No previously published work.

10. Email your submission to motusaudax (at) gmail (dot) com with the subject line It Takes All Kinds submission from (your name). Turnaround time for acceptance/rejection should be within 60 days. If longer than that, feel free to inquire.

11. You are welcome to submit work to each issue. Publication in a previous issue does not guarantee publication in future issues.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please have your work proofed and print-ready when submitting. I may fix a typo here and there; however, I have little time and no interest in editing work outside of what I do for my job.
